Community-driven campaigning for better tourism

In the Red Light District of Amsterdam, local residents have come together to make visitors more aware of the people, who actually live in the neighbourhood and encourage better, more considerate behaviour when visiting.

We Live Here is the title of the initiative that involves a campaign with pictures of local residents in their homes – on store fronts, on doors and windows, putting a human face on the neighbourhood and reminding visitors that they are in fact just that: visitors – to someone else’s home and that they should behave accordingly.

We Live Here is also a community-driven visitor information centre, where visitors can meet with residents and learn more about local life in the neighbourhood. The visitor centre also functions as a community centre, where locals can host activities for free. At the core of the centre and the related activities is the key principle that it is of, by and for the local residents.
