Uncomfortable Oxford Tours
Uncomfortable Oxford Tours cover the hidden naratives
Uncomfortable Oxford is a student-led organisation dedicated to raising awareness about the ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of British history – of inequality, discrimination and imperialism. Historical aspects represented by statues and monuments around Oxford. The organisation integrates academic research and critical analysis into guided walking tours, blogs, public lectures and events.
On one of the tours, attendees walk past a statue of Cecil Rhodes, late prime minister of the former Cape Colony in modern day South Africa and an open advocate for Anglo-Saxon supremacy. The statue of Rhodes has caused regular protests since its erection in 1911. Along the tours, tour guides encourage debate: do these monuments glorify problematic historic figures? Do they serve as a necessary reminder of the past? The guides have been praised for encouraging more nuanced discussions and differing perspectives. In 2019, 3000 tourists embarked on the tours.
