Green is the new black for the first energy positive hotel in the arctic circle

Scheduled to open in 2022, Svart will be located close to the Svartisen glacier, north of the Arctic Circle. Building in such a unique and fragile environment comes with a clear obligation to create a sustainable destination in harmony with nature. The hotel will have onsite education, a design lab and a sustainable farm producing ingredients for the four restaurants of the hotel. The hotel will consume 85% less energy compared to a similarly sized modern hotel and has pledged to be carbon-neutral and waste-free within five years of opening.

To achieve minimal environmental impact, the entirety of Svart’s energy consumption will be solar powered, while food in the hotel restaurant will be sourced locally, wherever possible. Additionally, energy-intensive materials will be used as little as possible in construction.
