Albergo Diffuso
Albergo Diffuso lets tourists stay in historic Italian buildings
Albergo Diffuso (meaning scattered hotel) is an innovative type of hospitality created in Italy in the 1980’s and has since spread across Europe. Albergo Diffuso renovates/refurbishes existing rooms in historic buildings around villages. The scattered hotel is managed from a shared centre – typically in a separate building devoted to reception, restaurant and administration.
The core idea of the project is that it is more sustainable to renovate existing rooms than to build a new hotel. Albergo Diffuso offers all the services of a conventional hotel with cleaning, meals and leisure facilities, but guests get the experience of staying in attractive surroundings like castles and revitalised abandoned buildings.
Albergo Diffuso spreads tourism revenue to less popular tourist areas. The rooms are intended to have minimal environmental impact in construction and operation, while staying true to style of the original building.
Albergo Diffuso revitalizes less popular buildings, while respecting cultural and historical heritage (11.3, 11.4, 11.A)
Albergo Diffuso offers accommodation that’s more sustainable in its operation and construction than conventional options (13.3)
