The Norwegian standard for sustainable destinations

The Norwegian tourism industry is committed to creating tourism growth in balance with Norway’s environmental and social heritage. To achieve this goal, Innovation Norway has developed the Sustainable Destination label to destinations that show persistent commitment to economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The Sustainable Destination label differs from other similar certifications as it is awarded based on progress rather than the achievement of set goals. This mechanism ensures that progress does not stagnate as labelled organisations must continue to showcase further improvements to keep their certification.

The 42 criteria and 104 indicators included in the certification are continually monitored and evaluated. The label assesses promotion of local food and products, energy efficiency, waste reduction and much more.
