Sakha
Sakha provides transportation by women for women
Sakha Consulting Wings is an Indian social enterprise that employs all-female taxi drivers to exclusively serve female passengers and their families. Chauffeurs are selected from marginalized communities and given rigorous training in self-defence, driving and English to enable them to deal with whichever challenges that may arise on the job.
The International Labour Association ranks India 121st out of 131 countries in female participation in the work force. In spite of India’s recent economic boom, the percentage of women in work has fallen from an already low 35% in 2005, to 26% in 2019. Sakha gives marginalized women from struggling communities access to a largely male dominated industry.
To date, Sakha has provided more than 1 million safe taxi rides. Apart from private customers, the enterprise works with corporate clients to provide safe rides for female employees.
