Bella mossa has incentivised more than 20,000 people to use green transportation

In 2017, Bologna wanted to test a new approach to reducing traffic and C02-emissions. On the app Better Points, they launched Bella Mossa – a system that rewards users who walk, bike, car share or use other means of sustainable transportation. Rewards include free cinema tickets, beer, ice cream and discounts at more than 100 local business partners. Bella Mossa also allows for businesses and organisations to implement sustainability leaderboards and workplace challenges for its employees.

Bologna had already tried banning vehicles during specific time periods, but Bella Mossa served as a way to test if an incentive system would be more effective than restrictions in reducing traffic and emissions. After the project’s initial 6 months, more than 15,000 people had participated to save approximately 750 tons of C02-emissions. Importantly, data from Better Points show that 80% of registered Bella Mossa trips replaced a conventional car trip.
