Stay hydrated and stop plastic pollution

RefillNZ is a campaign to prevent plastic pollution by making it easier to refill water bottles. The tap water in New Zealand is free and clean so generally there should be little need to buy bottled water. Unfortunately, publicly available water fountains are difficult to come by and many tourists may feel discouraged to enter private businesses or households to ask for a refill of their bottles.

RefillNZ works with local restaurants, bars and tourist attractions to welcome visitors to refill their bottles. RefillNZ provides its partners with window stickers that make it clear for by-passers that the location welcomes them to come in and refill free of charge.

RefillNZ also provides an app with an interactive map to locate RefillNZ stations. To date, RefillNZ has more than 1100 refill sites all over New Zealand. Each year, 828 million plastic bottles are disposed in New Zealand. If everyone refilled just 1/3 of the time, New Zealand would save 257 million plastic bottles a year.

We now wait for our borders to open to overseas tourists, hopefully sometime in the first quarter of 2021, maybe you could put us on your ‘must places to visit’.
