Messukeskus is an expo and convention centre in Helsinki. The centre has been evaluated according to the Think Sustainably criteria (see another highlighted idea) guide to Helsinki as it passes all 15 of the guides sustainability criteria.

The venue is well on its way to achieve its pledge of being “110% carbon neutral” by 2029. The roof has been equipped with 1.589 solar panels – making it one of Helsinki’s biggest solar panel farms. Other initiatives include switching to LED lighting, installing water saving nuzzles in faucets and creating food-waste buffets for corporate events.

Over the past ten years, Messukeskus has managed to decrease water consumption by 50%, heat consumption by 20% and electricity consumption by 15%. In addition, the convention centre has achieved a 99% waste reuse rate by implementing recycling bins and environmental supervisors who offer assistance to customers about the centre’s recycling facilities.
