Stay Native
Stay native and support the indigenous community
Stay Native is a New Zealand based social enterprise that offers authentic cultural experiences hosted by indigenous locals. Experiences include a jet-ski safari, a guided tour of Auckland’s Māori community and much more. Stay Native’s purpose is to use tourism to improve the wellbeing and economic prosperity of the Māori and other indigenous pacific people in New Zealand. The agency charges a small commission to keep the operation going, but 100% of the cost of the actual experiences goes directly to the hosts.
Maori make up less than 1% of small businesses in New Zealand and are nearly three times more likely to be unemployed than the average New Zealander. The median weekly income of Māori descendants is almost $100 lower than that of New Zealanders of European descent. Further, employment opportunities for the Māori are scarce as some 20% rely on benefits as a source of income compared to just 6.2%of European descendants.
