COVID-19: Finding use for empty hotels
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the hospitality industry especially hard as borders have closed and travelling has been put to a halt. Hotels have been quick to adapt to the situation and find new ways of proving relevance and value to local communities, as well as identify new, alternative sources of income. Examples include:
The French Ministry of Gender Equality paid for hotel rooms for victims of domestic abuse – an important initiative as police reports of domestic violence rose 36% in Paris during the lockdown.
Hilton, in collaboration with American Express, donated one million of its US hotel rooms to accommodate medical staff until the end of May.
Home Office Im Hotel, Germany, worked with hotels to repurpose rooms into home offices where guests could work without interruptions with fast Wi-Fi and food delivery.
This is just a small sample of the ideas to how the hospitality sector has repurposes itself during the pandemic
crisis.
